The Making of : How to Survive a Crawfish Boil

Jackie Maloney April 5, 2018

Most of the how-to illustrations I create start with personal experience. Being from Long Island, I had zero experience with crawfish. But, as a lover of blue crab & lobster, I had a feeling these guys could potentially also be my "thing".

Rather than planning a glorious foodie trip to Louisiana, I googled. I spent hours cross-referencing YouTube videos about eating crawfish. I learned about the controversy behind sucking the head. The strong suggestion to pair with beer (gross... but to each their own). I watched people pinch, dig, suck, bite, slobber.... you get the idea.

Here's what I came up with after my research :

"How can we trust your instructions

if you've only watched internet videos?"

Well, I finally got to test my research at the SARASOTA SEAFOOD & MUSIC FESTIVAL in January.

I can now confirm that my diverse bunch of YouTube mentors taught me well : My other half & I Survived a Crawfish Boil using my illustration. My hunch was right, crawfish are definitely my thing!
